Hampshire Care Home Closures

Here we go again. A local council has been given approval to close down a number of elderly care homes.

Of course, the council are promising to build or refurbish existing properties to replace the homes earmarked for closure.

All this at a cost of £173m.

Call me a cynic but I would like to see the council spend the money first, create the extra 100 rooms before closing the existing facilities.

Yes, you did get that right, £173m will increase the available beds from 900 to 1000.

If the council go ahead I can envisage the care homes closing, the residents moved to where ?

And then some more deserving  cause will be found to use the £173m !!!

Lack Of Consistency

To be honest I don’t have much sympathy with this couple. They knew that there would be consequences when they took their kids out of school.

However, there is a distinct lack of consistency with how local authorities deal with school absence.

Due to a change in personal circumstances, my granddaughter has been trying, for a couple of months, to find a school placement for her daughter. She phones the authorities frequently but is told that there are no places available.

How can one set of parents be fined for “temporarily” removing their child from school whilst the local authorities fail to find a placement for my great granddaughter and face no punishment. I thought it was a legal requirement that children had to go to school.

Doesn’t that same law hold the local authorities liable for the provision of that schooling ?

If my granddaughter had chosen to keep her daughter away from school, they would have fined her.

South Parade Pier At Risk

South Parade Pier’s owners face liquidation over unpaid energy bills. The danger is if the owners of the pier have to close it down due to lack of income then the real rot will set in. All the while the pier is in active use there is a chance for it to be maintained and refurbished. As soon as the usage declines then so does the state of repair.

Everyone knows that these structures are expensive to maintain due to the harsh, salty and damp environment that they are in. There must be an argument for Portsmouth City Council or even Hampshire County Council stepping in and providing some degree of subsidy to ensure that South Parade Pier doesn’t go the way of Hastings and Brighton piers.

Seaside piers are part of our heritage. Many have succumbed to extreme weather, arsonists and old age. We almost lost South Parade Pier a few years ago, no thanks to Ken Russel and his crew who were filming Tommy at the time. We don’t want that to happen again.

Its time for local government or even national government to step in.
