Boiled Eggs

Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

Believe it or not, the humble boiled egg, is the one food that truly transports me back.

When we were kids, there were chickens and geese in our backyard. My dad used to feed them on commercially available feeds, but Mum used to give them all the veggie scraps from the kitchen. Stuff like potato and carrot peelings, trimmings from home grown leeks and the leaves from cabbages and cauliflower.

It’s hard to describe the flavour. The yolk always had a rich taste. Something that your typical supermarket factory produced eggs fails to match. As soon as you crack the shell, lift the lid. You can tell the egg is not going to meet expectations. The colour of the yolk is a dead give away. My childhood eggs all had a rich golden yolk. Today’s supermarket offering tends to be a pale yellow.

Obviously, the birds diet has a lot to do with how the eggs look and taste.

When was the last time that childhood memory was triggered ?

We were on our way down to Central France and had stopped at a B&B. They had chooks roaming around their orchard. The eggs served for breakfast, supplied by those hens, were simply delicious.

Australia’s prime minister says anti-Muslim senator should be charged for striking teen who broke egg on his head

What is this world coming to ?

A man is assaulted, albeit with an egg. He retaliated with a couple of slaps.

The Australian Prime Minister says the assault victim should be charged !!!

The victim, Australian Senator Fraser Anning, may be anti Muslim but he was assaulted and in my book was perfectly justified in his reaction.

There should be no support for his assailant.

Compare the reactions here in Oz to those seen when British MP John Prescott was egged. Prescott actually punched the assailant. His boss, Tony Blair, is reported to have said “John is John when asked to comment.

Time to get real and focus on real issues methinks.

Egg mystery is a web cracker

When I was about seven, my dad was the village bobby in Westfield, East Sussex. The police station was a small flat-roofed extension on the side of the house in which we made our home. What made this house interesting was the garden which was well over 100 feet long. A huge space which my dad pretty much turned into a small holding. Along with the huge amount of fruit and veg my parents kept chickens and geese. I can remember seeing eggs of all colours, shapes and sizes. Only the goose eggs were as large as the egg which is the subject of the linked story. We never ever had an egg within an egg.

I can only say that, finding an egg within an egg which in total weighed nearly half a pound, this is EGGSTRAORDINARY.
