In A Gadda Da Vida – RIP Lee Dorman

Bassist for rock band Iron Butterfly, Lee Dorman, has passed away at the age of 70. Apparently he had long suffered heart problems.

Loan Me A Dime

Sublime, 40 years on and this has to be way up there on the list of must listen tunes. This should be on everyone’s iPod, tape deck, CD and MP3 player. Thank you RP for the introduction. You all should take a listen to Boz with Duane Allman on lead guitar……

Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar dies at 92

RIP Ravi. You opened my eyes, or perhaps I should say ears, to yet another musical treasure and left the world a huge legacy. Your collaborations with so many other musical stars has enriched the musical world. Your offspring, Anoushka and Nora are continuing the work that you started.

We will all miss you.

Blown Away

As many of you know Radio Paradise is my station of choice to listen to when I am working. However, just once in a while it has an adverse effect and stops me from working. Well we just had one of those moments. Had to kick back, turn up the volume and close my eyes ….. They played the following tracks in succession…

Sonny Landreth – Congo Square

Stevie Ray Vaughn – Pipeline

Not the version played on RP but this is a great clip to watch.

California Guitar Trio – The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Again, not the version played by RP but well worth watching as an intro to these guys.

RIP Dave Brubeck

At the age of 91, Dave Brubeck has departed this earth and we have lost another great talent.

I am pretty sure that it was hearing the  Dave Brubeck Quartets rendition of  “Take Five” that  really introduced me to jazz. Written by quartet member  Paul Desmond this track always makes me stop and listen. This may seem strange to hear from a dedicated rock music lover. In truth I love all music that is played and presented well and for me the clear airy drumming with the iconic sax “vocal” all underpinned by Brubecks virtuoso piano playing has it all.

Of course Brubeck is more than this one single lifted from the 1959 album “Time Out” so as another tribute to Brubeck I include “Take The ‘A’ Train”

The Dave Brubeck web site is showing a nice collection of pictures of Brubeck over the years to a soundtrack showcasing a selection of  tracks featuring Dave’s piano playing. The site is well worth a visit.

Brubeck died of heart failure yesterday, just one day before his 92nd birthday.

Dave we will miss you.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band – Shake Your Money Maker

Elmore James’ original has evolved into a staple of the blues set. With all the impossibly-talented musicians out there I’m certain there’s a cover that rocks harder than the Paul Butterfield version but I haven’t heard it yet. Check out Mike Bloomfield‘s slide lead. That cat got it, for sure.

Alice’s Restaurant Massacree

I have just spent the last 20 mins, or so, listening to Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.

It has become a tradition for Radio Paradise to play this in its entirety every Thanksgiving.  I first heard this album, by Arlo Guthrie (son of Woodie) back in 1969/70 thanks to my friend Jim Gibson. The album was released in 1967.

Give it a listen, you will smile if you listen to it all the way through.

The First Major Rock Band I Ever Saw

Thanks to Dick, a guy that I was in digs with,  Zep are the first band I ever saw live. This was back in 1969. How he convinced me to go I will never know as, at that time, I had never heard of them. All I know is that it was a brilliant concert.

Later that year he also persuaded me to go and see John Mayall, another huge name in the British rock hall of fame. For me 1969 was a pivotal year as far as music is concerned. Since then I have seen many many bands.

So, where ever you are Dick (can’t remember your surname) from Chichester, thank you for awakening a love of rock music that has spanned over 40 years and is still going strong.

Led Zeppelin‘s concert film Celebration Day is released on video, November 19th. Here is their rendition of Black Dog from the 2007 O2 reunion show.

Mike Harding – Fired on the phone after 15 years with the BBC

‘I’d like to thank Mike Harding, who has spent 15 years at the top of his game, delighting fans with his expertise and rooting out the very best folk music. On his watch, folk has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity and Mike has been key in supporting the genre and introducing Radio 2 listeners to a broad range of new artists.

So says Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2, who has sacked Mike Harding.

This is the corporation doing what they do best, cocking things up.

And for why ?

To make room for former Radio 1 breakfast show host Mark Radcliffe. Are they going to have him host a folk show, I don’t think so. So not only is this a slap in the face for Mike Harding but it is a catastrophe for the British folk fans. The loss of a national weekly folk show will be hard for the BBC to recover from.

This decision makes absolutely no sense.
