More “Penny Mordaunt” Headline Grabbing

In these austere times it is so good to know that Ms. Mordaunt has the time to devote to fighting the ivory trade.

Portsmouth North’s Penny Mordaunt has pledging her support for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)’s campaign to protect elephants from poachers.

Don’t take this the wrong way. I too am against the ivory trade that is based on such cruelty. There are however more important, local, issues that Penny Mordaunt could and should be focussed on.

She said: ‘We must take the lead in the international community to stop elephants dying to fuel the ivory trade.

I believe this country has been a long time supporter of the fight against animal cruelty in general and this cruel crime in particular. Many members of the general public already contribute to various funds and charities.

What the cynics amongst us don’t need is our local MPs jumping on various emotive bandwagons to up their public profiles on the run up to local elections.

Although this is US based and US targeted it is just as applicable to the UK or an country where wives and families are waiting for their loved ones to return.

Dear America,

I’m pretty sure you don’t know me although you’re probably convinced that you do. You’ve seen me (or someone like me) on the news, in the paper or on a Lifetime tv show. You might have witnessed our tearful airport good-bye or clapped at our  reunion. You might spot me by my bumper sticker, license plate or “Red T-shirt on Friday”. It might be my accent or longing for Dunkin Donuts that gives away the fact that I’m not from around here. Another military wife.

I’m not just another military wife though. Actually, none of us are. There are things you don’t know about us. Things that you can’t see in twenty seconds on the news or find in a front page photo. There are things that are hidden in the tearful goodbyes and forgotten in the sweet hellos. I am more than a bumper sticker, a red…

Vandals made to clear up graffiti after they went on 10-day spree – Too Right

You reap what you sow as the saying goes and it was certainly true for these five miscreants.

VANDALS who went on a 10-day graffiti spree were made to clear up their scrawlings after being caught in the act by police.

The five youngsters aged 11 to 13 defaced buildings across Havant, Hayling Island, Leigh Park and Bedhampton, with their signature graffiti signs, known as tagging.

It caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to 17 homes, underpasses, shops and car parks.

We definitely need more of this sort of punishment doled out to the perpetrators. It shows society that there are consequences for negative actions.

PC Wimshurst added: ‘These lads are first-time offenders and the best solution seemed to be putting right what they had done.

‘It offers the best compensation for those who suffered and it also helps to make the offenders realise the amount of damage they have caused.

‘I think that this will teach them more than being put in a cell and told off. It was a chance to put common sense policing to work.’

These kids will have found that they had to work harder to clean up the results of their actions. It will have given them first hand experience of what their victims would have had to endure.

They spent four days scrubbing walls, litter picking and tidying up areas across the Havant borough.

Seeing them cleaning up is also a visible indicator to society that this type of action will not be tolerated. The handing out of cautions, ASBOs etc. are all to often seen as the soft approach.

If not for the location names this could be the UK. And I so agree with the missing letter “s” from the word “caring”.

Readers! As we approach our third annual, “Take Our Children to the Park…And Leave Them There Day” (Saturday, May 19), this story is outrageous. Apparently a dad let his two kids, ages 6 and 9, play in a local suburban Pittsburgh park on Saturday morning for not quite two hours while he did some shopping and took a shower. That is, while he went about the tasks of everyday life.

Meantime, a woman noticed this unusual thing: Kids playing without an adult around! That this fact was “disturbing” to an onlooker is what is so disturbing about our culture. For millennia, kids kept themselves occupied while their parents were otherwise engaged. A 9-year-old watching a 6-year-old was NORMAL, not a REASON TO CALL THE COPS.

But call the cops she did. And when they got there, they charged the dad with two counts of child endangerment. Meantime, of course, child…
