Brilliant.
The police now have the powers but they seem to be discretionary.
It is illegal to use these things on public roads. Surely, there should be no discretion. Confiscation and scrappage should be automatic.
However, this is a step in the right direction.
These are motorcycles and should be licensed as such. These things are a danger all over Toronto too.
Yes, they are definitely a menace. The privately owned ones are driven on the road with the drivers having no formal training, no insurance and no road sense. I had one leap off the pavement, cut across my bows before riding diagonaly across a traffic light controlled 4-way intersection, seemingly oblivious to the traffic and who had right of way. And I have lost count of how many I have seen, riding three up !!
In my little corner of Canada, drivers require a G1 license to drive a car, and an M1 for a motorcycle. For the life of me I cannot fathom how thrse electto bikes are exempt.
.
Toronto has a big e-Bike manufacturer callled Daymak and a city government that hates cars. So these e-Bikes are embraced by the environmentall movement and pro-transit lobby. Only ptoblem is people are gomna get killed!
.
Riding a motorcycle is HARDER than driving a car. And a bike always loses a conflict with a car. Putting unskilled, untrained, unlicensed riders on these roads is just negligent. Criminally negligent.
.
Do you also have the e-scooters ? Parents buy them over here for their kids, then fail to monitor usage. e-Bikes and e-Scooters are illegal for use on the public highways and pavements (sidewalks). Problem is they are nigh on impossible to police.
Thankfully, e-scooters aren’t so popular over here. But they look really dangerous. Way to fast for the capability of the riders (kids).
.
However, e-bikes under a certain HP (of kW/h) are perfectly leagal to ride on public roads. They even have silly phony plates that say ELECTRIC. Riding them on a major road in Toronto is a death wish. A motorcyclist KNOWS to claim the lane, ride in the middle of the lane. But e-bike riders just cruise along in the gutter next to the curb. Cars squeeze by because the rider doesn’t ‘take’ the lane.
.
The worst part of this riding method is at right turn intersections. You’re in a car, watching in front of you for there to be no pedestrians, and nobody turning left from the oncoming lane. You start to make the right hand turn … BOOM …. an e-bike drove up your right side, squeezing between your car and the curb (your blind spot).
.
In these days when everyone tries to be so careful and safe, it is shocking that these contractions don’t requiring any training or licensing. Maybe one day when enough people die, our local government will look at these e-bokes as motor vehicles.
These scooters are a good idea for the lazy but there are issues with them and where they are ridden this I get
